Is your product compatible with my existing infrastructure?
Upgrading to a full-featured data management tool can certainly upset your environment’s current setup, so bringing in a technical expert to consult might be a good idea. Many companies that traditionally used a data warehouse environment are adding products to give themselves increased flexibility and a new way to hold data for analysis. Like anything else, if it sounds too good to be true, ask them, and during the demo, see if they’ll have fun deploying a mock version of the solution to your environment so you can get a taste.
Does your solution automate the connection of data from external sources?
In the same way that you asked the vendor about the data types supported by their platform, you need to know whether or not the solution includes pre-built integrations that allow for seamless deployment. This way, you will be able to connect directly to all the data sources you were already using without having to exit the product to secure the connectors through a standalone data integration solution.
Are you integrating large data sources?
Data source support will increasingly drive purchasing decisions across the enterprise. While some very large enterprises may not need as much big data connectivity, forward-thinking organizations should familiarize themselves with the list of data sources and connectors supported by each potential vendor. Does the tool accept 3rd Party APIs that may interest you? How often are new connectors added? It is essential to ensure that a supplier matches all the sources you use now and will use in the future.
Does the tool offer built-in analytics?
Since data management aims to enable organizations to further deepen their analytical frameworks, it is only natural that some solutions provide their own proprietary analytical tools within. It comes down to personal preference. Going with a provider that includes built-in analytics could be a great way to save money and avoid getting too technical. However, you may already be using a business analytics tool that you really like, in which case you can deploy a cutting-edge approach.
What is your main area of interest (flagship software)?
Not all solution providers are created equal. Often, suppliers position themselves in a market niche. By focusing on a specific part of the space, like data virtualization, for example, vendors can become experts in developing narrower software that, while professional, really works for its users. As a result, the company increases efficiency and overall quality and reduces the time required to deploy the solution on an organizational level.
