The Advisory Council, made up of the chairs of national and international committees, regional alliances and affiliated organizationsselected the proposed definition of the museum to be submitted to the vote of the Extraordinary General Assembly, which will be held on August 24e during ICOM Prague 2022.
The methodology that led to this proposal, led by the ICOM Standing Committee for Museum Definition, Perspective and Potentials (ICOM Define) was based on 4 consultation cycles, divided into 11 stages lasting 18 months. ICOM Define worked intensively on processing the results of consultation 4 and developing the two final proposals, which were put to the vote on the 91st Advisory Council meeting.
The selected proposal will be presented to the Executive Bureau and then voted on in Prague during the Extraordinary General Assembly on August 24th. Please note that the decision on the adoption of the proposal will only be taken at this time.
MUSEUM DEFINITION PROPOSAL
“A museum is a permanent non-profit institution at the service of society which researches, collects, preserves, interprets and exhibits tangible and intangible heritage. They operate and communicate ethically, professionally and with community participation, providing varied experiences for education, enjoyment, reflection and knowledge sharing.
According to the ICOM Statutes, adopted by the 22nd General Assembly in Vienna, Austria, on August 24, 2007, the current definition is as follows:
